YouTube Shorts Thumbnails
YouTube Shorts have their own URL format, but thumbnail access works the same way as standard videos. This guide explains what to expect when downloading Shorts thumbnails.
Shorts URL format
A typical Shorts link looks like:
https://youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
The VIDEO_ID is the same 11-character identifier used across all YouTube thumbnail endpoints. SnapThumb extracts it automatically — no special handling required.
What thumbnail you get
Shorts are vertical videos, but YouTube's standard thumbnail CDN returns landscape-oriented images — the same variants (maxresdefault, hqdefault, etc.) used for search results and embeds. These are not the vertical cover frame you see in the Shorts feed.
This is a limitation of YouTube's public thumbnail endpoints, not the downloader tool. There is no separate CDN path for a dedicated Shorts cover image.
How to download
- Copy the Shorts URL from the YouTube app or browser.
- Paste it into the SnapThumb tool.
- Click Get Thumbnails and download the best available variant.
Alternative: share link format
If you have a standard youtu.be or watch?v= link for the same Short, that works too. All formats resolve to the same video ID and return the same thumbnails.
