YouTube Thumbnail Sizes Explained
YouTube serves video thumbnails through a public image CDN at i.ytimg.com. Each video has multiple named variants, and understanding the differences helps you pick the right size for your project.
Standard thumbnail variants
| Variant | Typical resolution | Aspect ratio | Best for | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
maxresdefault.jpg |
1280 × 720 | 16:9 | Highest quality downloads, presentations | Only when source video supports it |
sddefault.jpg |
640 × 480 | 4:3 | Medium-quality embeds | Usually available |
hqdefault.jpg |
480 × 360 | 4:3 | Reliable fallback when HD is missing | Widely available |
mqdefault.jpg |
320 × 180 | 16:9 | Compact previews, sidebars | Widely available |
default.jpg |
120 × 90 | 4:3 | Smallest standard size | Always available |
Storyboard frames
In addition to the named sizes above, YouTube may serve up to four storyboard preview frames at 0.jpg, 1.jpg, 2.jpg, and 3.jpg. These are individual frames extracted from the video and are not available for every upload.
URL structure
All variants follow the same pattern:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/VARIANT.jpg
Replace VIDEO_ID with the 11-character identifier and VARIANT with the variant name (e.g., maxresdefault).
Why resolutions vary
The dimensions listed above are typical values, not guarantees. YouTube generates thumbnails based on the source video's resolution and encoding. A video uploaded at 480p may never have a genuine 1280×720 thumbnail, even if the maxresdefault URL responds with an image.
Choosing the right size
- Need the largest possible image? Start with
maxresdefault, then fall back tosddefaultorhqdefault. - Need a small preview? Use
mqdefaultordefault. - Need a specific frame? Try storyboard variants
